The Yankee Hill Machine (YHM) YHM-5M2-QD is a quick-detach (QD) muzzle brake designed specifically for 5.56mm/.223 caliber rifles. It serves a dual purpose: it significantly reduces felt recoil and muzzle rise when shooting unsuppressed, and it acts as a rock-solid mounting point for YHM’s Phantom and Turbo series suppressors.

Key Specifications

  • Thread Pitch: 1/2"-28 (Standard for most AR-15 platforms).
  • Material: Heavy-duty 4140 steel with a black oxide finish.
  • Design: Three-chamber "Phantom" style design with no downward-facing ports (this prevents kicking up dust when shooting from a prone position).
  • Weight: ~3.97 oz.
  • Length: 2.418 inches.

Compatibility

This muzzle brake uses YHM’s venerable Phantom QD system. It is compatible with:

  • Suppressors: YHM Turbo, Turbo K, Turbo T2, Turbo T3, and Resonator/Resonator R2 (since .30 cal cans can fit .22 cal mounts).
  • Blast Deflectors: YHM Phantom Blast Deflector (YHM-3130).

Why Choose This Over a Flash Hider?

  1. Recoil Management: If you do a lot of rapid-fire or competition shooting without the suppressor, the brake keeps the muzzle much flatter than a standard flash hider.
  2. Sacrificial Baffle: When shooting suppressed, a muzzle brake acts as a "sacrificial" first baffle. It takes the brunt of the hot, abrasive gases before they hit the actual baffles of your expensive suppressor, potentially extending the life of the can.

Installation Tip

Unlike a flash hider, this brake must be timed (aligned) so the ports face sideways. YHM includes a shim kit with the YHM-5M2-QD for this purpose.

Note: Do not use a crush washer when mounting a suppressor host, as it can cause the muzzle device to sit slightly canted, leading to a catastrophic baffle strike. Always use the provided shims.
