Wilson Combat 1911 Government Drop In Beavertail Grip Safety Blued Carbon Steel 429BG UPC 874218002084

Product Description

Eliminate painful hammer bite and modernize your classic Government wheelhouse with the Wilson Combat® Drop-In Beavertail Grip Safety for 1911 Government Models (SKU: 429BG / UPC: 874218002084). Designed specifically for shooters who demand the recoil control and hand protection of an extended upswept beavertail without irreversibly altering valuable factory or collectible GI frame tangs, the 429BG provides an authoritative armorer solution. By wrapping over the factory frame horns, this drop-in component spreads recoil energy evenly across the web of the hand while facilitating a modern high-thumbs grip purchase.

Precision-crafted from heat-treated 4140 carbon steel, this safety delivers outstanding yield strength and dimensional stability under continuous combat cycling. The component is treated with a non-reflective, deep matte blued finish that blends seamlessly with traditional carbon steel 1911 finishes while resisting surface abrasion, solvent wash, and corrosive perspiration. Wilson Combat’s refined internal geometry maintains precise alignment with your 1911 sear spring and thumb safety crosspin, eliminating vertical slop and providing a smooth, positive return stroke when uncocked or holstered.

The ergonomic contouring features an extended beavertail shroud with an internal relief channel configured to clear round Commander-style or skeletonized combat hammers. By repositioning the hand closer to the central bore axis, muzzle climb during rapid defensive strings is substantially reduced, driving faster sight recovery and split-second transitions. Built to the exacting standards that made Wilson Combat the premier name in custom 1911 manufacturing, the 429BG provides custom-grade shootability without the expensive machine-shop labor.

Fitment Matrix: Direct exterior fit for standard full-size 5-inch 1911 Government Model frames (Colt Series 70, Series 80, Springfield GI, Rock Island, and Mil-Spec pattern receivers). CRITICAL WARNING: This component will NOT fit frames pre-cut with a .250-inch or .220-inch radius, nor will it seat flush on Commander/Officer frames (requires MPN 429BC). Requires replacement of original long GI spur hammers with a Commander-style oval or skeletonized hammer; standard spur hammers will impact the beavertail pocket. Due to varied trigger bow and sear tolerances across 1911 manufacturers, verify the internal trigger-blocking lug blocks trigger movement when released; minor stoning of the lug face may be required for precise timing.

  1. Ensure the host firearm is completely clear, drop the magazine, lock the slide rearward, and visually and physically inspect the chamber to verify the weapon is unloaded.
  2. Field-strip the slide assembly, remove both grip panels, cock the hammer, push the mainspring housing pin out from the frame, and slide the mainspring housing down approximately 0.5 inches to relieve tension on the sear spring.
  3. Rotate the manual thumb safety upward to its halfway disassembly notch, pull the thumb safety cross-pin straight out from the left side of the frame, and lift the factory GI grip safety out of the frame tangs.
  4. Seat the Wilson Combat 429BG into the frame tangs, reinstall the thumb safety pin, and inspect trigger stirrup clearance: the safety lug must completely block rearward trigger movement in the relaxed state, and clear smoothly when depressed approximately 50 percent of its travel. (If the trigger does not release when fully depressed, stone only the lower engagement face of the blocking lug with a fine Arkansas stone).
  5. Slide the mainspring housing fully upward, reinsert and stake the retaining pin, install your Commander hammer, and execute the full 1911 5-point safety function test (dry-fire trigger block check, thumb safety isolation check, and positive disconnector reset verification).

Key Features

  • No-Cut Frame Conversion: Modifies standard Government GI frame tang profiles to a functional upswept beavertail without permanent cutting, milling, or frame refinishing.
  • Heat-Treated 4140 Carbon Steel: Precision cast and CNC-machined steel alloy provides extreme structural durability, wear resistance, and zero structural flex.
  • Eliminates Hammer Bite: Extended swept-back beavertail completely isolates the web of the firing hand from hammer contact and reciprocating slide rails.
  • High-Axis Ergonomic Profile: Allows a higher, more authoritative shooting grip to reduce muzzle flip and accelerate sight realignment during rapid fire.
  • Durable Blued Military Finish: Deep chemical bluing matches classic Series 70 and Series 80 forged steel receivers while offering excellent oil retention.
  • Series 70 & Series 80 Compatibility: Engineered with appropriate internal dimensions to operate seamlessly across both traditional and firing-pin-safety equipped 1911 platforms.
